PanCATS
Having a steel drum band at Handley was the dream of retired
Principal Irene Hensinger. The name PanCATs is derived from P.C.A.T.,
the acronym for the Program for Creative and Academically Talented at
Handley School in the Saginaw Public School District.
“Pan” is the common name for a musical
instrument shaped from a 55-gallon oil drum. Pans were first invented
on the islands of
Trinidad and Tobago in the mid-20th century.
The band, now in its second generation, already has an impressive resume
including performances at Saginaw Valley State University, Alma College,
Saginaw City Hall, Saginaw Temple Theatre, All-Area Arts Awards Banquet
at The Dow Event Center; and Old Saginaw City Art Fair.
The 16-member ensemble performs traditional calypso
as well as a variety of other styles. In addition to the beautiful
melody and harmony of the
pans, the PanCATs also utilize an “engine room” of eight
or more performers using an assortment of interesting percussion instruments.
The PanCATs are led by Joseph Center, a Saginaw Public Schools high
school teacher.

The PanCATs love to perform! If you are planning an event, contact us.
The Band is available for schools, private parties, weddings, and civic
events. Although we are a non-profit group, we do have maintenance, travel
expenses, and dreams of expanding. Donations to support our efforts
are greatly appreciated.
