Superintendent Search Process

Overview
On July 16, 2008 the Saginaw Board of Education announced the selection of Dr. Thomas Barris to serve as Interim Superintendent for Saginaw Public Schools following Superintendent Dr. Gerald Dawkins letter of resignation effective August 8, 2008. On October 8, 2008 during a Board Action Meeting, Saginaw Board of Education members voted to delay the Superintendent search and extend the contract to then Interim Superintendent Dr. Thomas N. Barris, who graciously accepted delaying his retirement, for one additional year to June 2010.

As a result, the Saginaw Board of Education has begun the search process for a new superintendent, retaining the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) to assist with the recruitment, identification and selection of a superintendent for Saginaw Public Schools. MASB's major responsibility is to local boards of education. Their primary goal is to develop an individualized process that will produce the best match for our district's needs.

Saginaw Board of Education is confident that the process will enable the selection of a candidate who best meets the leadership needs of the district and will continue Saginaw Publics Schools tradition of excellence.

Dr. Micheal Emlaw and Dr. Walter Burt will represent MASB as consultants assisting Saginaw Public Schools in the search process. Complete Electronic Posting

Criteria For Selection
As part of the selection process, a leadership profile will be developed to identify the key qualities, skills, beliefs and abilities to be demonstrated by the new superintendent. Dr. Emlaw and Dr. Burt will conduct a series of community input forums for parents, faculty, students, and community members. A schedule of these meetings has been developed and is posted in the events section. An online survey is also available to gather input.
