Coulter Cougars Learn Matters of the Heart
Learning how to react in an emergency
situation builds confidence in Coulter Elementary
students. Coulter Elementary 3rd - 5th grade
students participated in a two -week long heart
healthy campaign by participating in “CPR
Anytime.” (A service provided by the American
Heart Association). The purpose was to raise
awareness on heart related illnesses, prepare
students for emergency situations, and to teach
them the importance of maintaining healthy hearts
themselves as well as their families.
Students received instruction by Jennifer
Carpenter, representative for the AHA who
mentioned that, “It’s not often that children this
young are taught a skill such as this.” The classes
began “CPR Anytime” by watching an
instructional DVD which featured young children
who have heart related illnesses. Students were
each given their own CPR kit and were guided in
the steps to take to correctly administer CPR.
Teachers and office staff also offered assistance to
students in this process.
Students learned a very valuable lesson and
skill on that day. They not only learned CPR, but they also learned that they could make a difference
in their own lives and the lives of others. Coulter
students left school that day with their kits in their
hands, eager to go home and practice and share what they had just learned. One of them said, “Thank you, Mrs. Spiller, because I live with my
grandmother and she may need me some day”.
