Dr. Jonathon Gould

Saginaw Public Schools is proud to welcome Dr. Jonathon A. Gould as the new principal of Handley Elementary School.

Dr. Gould, affectionately known by students as Dr. G, has over 16 years of being called that name by both university and K–12 students.

Dr. G joined Saginaw Public Schools in October 2024, teaching 6th grade science at SASA, after retiring from nearly 20 years as a full professor at Saginaw Valley State University.

At SVSU, he taught in the Teacher Education and Educational Leadership programs, shaping generations of future educators. Prior to that, he spent time teaching middle school math and science in Bay City Public Schools—and even earlier, served in funeral service as a licensed director.

Dr. G is known for blending humor and heart with high expectations. One of his favorite quotes?
“I teach kids… math on a good day!”

He brings a leadership philosophy that focuses on clarity, compassion, and potential:
“Strive to establish clear expectations at the onset—and then support everyone to their fullest potential along the journey.”

Dr. G and his wife, Cheri, have six children and three grandchildren. They enjoy long walks (ideally ending with an ice cream cone) and time spent with family.

We’re grateful to have Dr. G bringing his wealth of experience, care, and joy to the SPSD community.
