Monday and Tuesday were extremely exciting days in the 3rd grade Kato Crew classroom. They have been researching and learning info about chickens and ducks. The class has been waiting 28 days for the ducks and 21 days for the chicks to hatch. During this time the students became experts in animals that lay eggs, life cycles, and egg anatomy through egg dissection. As they watched the eggs hatch live, they learned about basic care and handling of the baby chicks. They are excited give each chick a name, take care of them and share them with the rest of the school. Currently they have 7 chicks that have hatched so far. The Kato crew is still waiting and hopeful their duck eggs with hatch soon.

Mrs. Kato’s homeroom went on a field trip to Green Point. Ranger Andrea walked with the class and joined them on their picnic lunch before they began their hike. Students collected data while on their walk that included air temperature (a HOT 89.7), wind speed, types of clouds, animal tracks and finishing the day with leaf rubbings. They cooled off with frozen juice after their walk back. It was an amazing day spending time learning in nature and a partnership with Shiawassee Wildlife Refuge.

Mrs. Kato’s 3rd Grade ELA classes got the opportunity to learn about the Saginaw Watershed, the water cycle and how trees are important to our environment. Ranger Andrea from the Shiawasee refuge is a partner with the sustainability teacher fellowship program that Mrs. Kato was a part of for the 2025 2026 school year. In ELA the students are studying why the world‘s freshwater sources are threatened and how they can persuade others to take action to contribute to a better world.

🏈 What a Night for SPSD Elementary Flag Football!

Last night’s Elementary Flag Football Playoff Celebration was a great example of what happens when our community shows up for our students.

From the games on the field to the energy in the stands, it was a night filled with excitement, teamwork, and support. We were proud to have community partners like H.E.L.P., Team Loyalty, and the Michigan Arsenal arena football team join us—connecting with students, signing autographs, and adding to the experience.

A big thank you as well to T&T Authentic Mexican Cuisine for keeping everyone fed and energized throughout the evening.

Most importantly, our student-athletes showed what hard work, discipline, and teamwork look like.

🏆 The championship game takes place on Wednesday, May 6—we hope to see the community back out again to support our students!

🍎 Happy National Teacher Day

Today is about recognizing the work that often goes unseen.

The early mornings, the extra time after school, the constant adjustments to meet students where they are—our teachers show up for it all. You guide, support, challenge, and care in ways that shape who our students become.

Saginaw Public Schools is stronger because of you.

Thank you for everything you bring to your classrooms and to our community.
