For students who want to shape the future by working with children and families, Saginaw Public Schools is providing a direct path through its Careers in Education program at the Saginaw Career Complex.

The program introduces students to a wide range of career paths, including teaching, school counseling, social work, child advocacy, and other human service professions. Through a mix of classroom instruction and hands-on experiences, students gain a deeper understanding of how children learn and develop, along with the skills needed to support them.

Students in the program study topics such as human growth and development, learning styles, lesson planning, and effective teaching methods. They also have the opportunity to gain real-world experience by working directly in local elementary schools, allowing them to see firsthand what a career in education looks like.

In addition to academic learning, students can earn valuable certifications, including CPR, First Aid, and CareerSafe Safety Training. Many students also have the opportunity to earn college credit through partnerships with institutions such as Saginaw Valley State University, Central Michigan University, and Delta College.

The program also emphasizes leadership and career readiness. Students participate in SkillsUSA, a national organization that helps develop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills, and complete senior projects that reflect their learning and career interests.

By combining classroom learning with real-world experience, the Careers in Education program helps students build a clear path toward careers that support children, families, and communities.
