Evander Crawford

At the Saginaw Career Complex, creativity isn’t just encouraged—it’s developed into real-world skills.

Students in the Graphics Arts program are gaining hands-on experience in design, photography, videography, and professional printing, preparing them for careers in today’s fast-moving creative industries.

For student Evander Crawford, the program has opened the door to new ways of thinking and creating. Through his work, he’s learning how to take ideas and turn them into polished, professional designs—skills that translate directly into real-world opportunities.

The two-year program blends creativity with technology, using industry-standard hardware and software to teach students the fundamentals of graphic design, DSLR photography, and video production. Students don’t just learn concepts—they apply them through real assignments, working with clients and receiving feedback from professionals in the field.

A key part of the program is helping students build a professional portfolio and personal website, giving them a strong foundation whether they choose to continue their education or enter the workforce immediately after graduation.

Students also have opportunities to grow beyond the classroom by participating in SkillsUSA, a national organization that promotes leadership, teamwork, and career readiness. Through competitions and project-based learning, students gain experience that sets them apart.

Additional opportunities include:

  • Work-based learning experiences (paid and unpaid)

  • Participation in the student-led Graphic Arts Club

  • Real-world design, photography, and printing competitions judged by industry professionals

Students in the program can earn 4.0 credits in Graphic Arts, along with potential college credit through institutions such as Delta College, Ferris State University, and Baker College.

Programs like Graphics Arts at SCC show what’s possible when students are given the tools, guidance, and opportunities to turn their creativity into something meaningful.
