At the Saginaw Career Complex, students interested in health care don’t have to wait until college to get started—they begin building real skills now.
For student Rowan Miller, the Nursing Occupations program is more than a class. It’s a hands-on experience that’s helping her prepare for a future in a field centered on care, compassion, and critical thinking.
Nurses touch people's lives through caring, and that foundation is at the heart of the program. Students train daily in an on-site clinical laboratory alongside licensed registered nurses and instructors, using advanced simulation mannequins that replicate real patient scenarios. These “Sim” patients allow students to practice and refine their clinical skills in a safe, controlled environment before stepping into real-world settings.
Beyond the classroom, students participate in clinical experiences at local hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities—giving them a deeper understanding of the profession and helping them explore different career paths in health care.
The program also provides students with opportunities to earn valuable certifications, including:
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid
National Health Care Foundation Skill Standards Certificate
Personal Management and Employability Skills
Students can earn 4.0 credits in Nursing Occupations and may also earn up to 20 college credits through partnerships with Delta College, Davenport University, and Ferris State University.
In addition, students can participate in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), a national organization that helps develop leadership, teamwork, and career readiness through competitions and service opportunities.
From hands-on clinical training to real-world experiences and industry-recognized certifications, the Nursing Occupations program at SCC is giving students like Rowan the tools and confidence to take the next step toward a career in health care.
