SAGINAW — Students in Saginaw Public Schools’ summer enrichment program are spending their break soaking up more than just sunshine — they’re gaining hands-on learning experiences through themed weeks and field trips designed to bring lessons to life.

On July 17, students in kindergarten through fourth grade from Kempton, Loomis and Herig elementary schools visited the Detroit Zoo as part of “Animal Week” — one of several weekly themes tied to the district’s K-4 summer programming.

The field trip, the third of the summer, helped students build on classroom activities, including a frog dissection that sparked curiosity and critical thinking.

“It was great seeing students gain a deeper understanding around wildlife, utilize their critical thinking skills and see their curiosity around many animals at the zoo,” said Laticia Whitehead, elementary summer program administrator.

Each week, students explore a new theme. The previous week focused on sewing, with students traveling to the Michigan Science Center in Detroit to learn about sewing techniques and materials.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lisa Tran, who oversees elementary curriculum, instruction, and early childhood, said the summer program is not only fun, but they also help students build discipline, balance, and self-awareness.

“We developed a program designed to keep students learning at all levels while also helping them enjoy the process,” Dr. Tran said. “Our focus includes life skills, social-emotional development, and academic support tailored for each student’s needs.”
