Coach Durrett poses in front of picture of high school football team

Saginaw Public Schools is proud to announce that legendary Saginaw High School football coach Don Durrett will be inducted into the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, Nov. 2, along with two other district icons—Lakisha Freeman Parker of Arthur Hill and Anthony Roberson of Saginaw High—on this momentous occasion.

Durrett, who became head coach of the Trojans in 1991, led one of the most dominant eras in Saginaw High football history. His leadership culminated in a 1999 Division 2 State Championship, where the Trojans defeated Birmingham Brother Rice 14–7 in a game that remains a proud milestone for the school and community.

Over 12 seasons, Durrett compiled 91 wins, the most by any football coach in Saginaw High history. His teams were known for their discipline, toughness, and championship mindset, consistently posting eight or more wins per season from 1995 to 2002. Durrett’s coaching legacy includes mentoring future college and NFL stars such as Charles Rogers, LaMarr Woodley, Tory Humphrey, Ronald Stanley, and Roy Manning.

A six-time Saginaw Valley League Coach of the Year, Durrett also earned Detroit Lions Coach of the Week and Coach of the Year honors, solidifying his reputation as one of Michigan’s most respected high school football coaches.

Joining Durrett in the Hall of Fame are two standout alumni athletes:

  • Lakisha Freeman Parker, a four-year starter at Arthur Hill from 2000 to 2004, earned multiple All-State and All-League honors, four consecutive team MVP awards, and recognition as a McDonald’s All-American. She chose Purdue University to continue her basketball career after receiving offers from top programs including Notre Dame and Indiana.

  • Anthony Roberson, a dual-sport star at Saginaw High, helped lead the football team to a Division 2 State Championship in 1999 and earned national acclaim in basketball. A two-time Parade All-American and McDonald’s All-American, Roberson played alongside future NBA legends like Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh. He starred at the University of Florida, earning SEC Co-Player of the Year and AP All-American honors before launching a professional career in the NBA and overseas. Today, he mentors young athletes as part of the Player Development Coaching staff at DME Academy.

Saginaw Public Schools congratulates Coach Durrett, Freeman Parker, and Roberson on their well-deserved Hall of Fame honors. Their achievements reflect the district’s proud tradition of excellence in athletics, leadership, and community impact.
