The cafeteria at Henry Doerr Early Childhood Center didn’t feel like a cafeteria on this winter morning. It felt like Christmas.
Holiday music floated through the room as families arrived, welcomed by staff dressed in festive sweaters, Santa hats, and big smiles. Tables were filled with parents and children sharing breakfast together, while nearby, little hands carefully decorated cookies—sprinkles scattered, icing smeared, and laughter everywhere.

This was Henry Doerr’s Deck the Halls Parent Engagement Program, and it was designed with one simple purpose: to celebrate families.
Throughout the space, care was evident in every detail. A table stocked with free winter hats, gloves, scarves, and shoes made sure families could leave with more than memories. Staff members move
d easily between tables, greeting parents by name, helping children, and making sure everyone felt welcome and seen.
And then there was Santa.
Students lined up excitedly to visit him—some shy, some bursting with energy—each one receiving a gift and the chance to take a photo. What many didn’t realize at first was that Santa was none other than Superintendent Dr. Ramont Roberts, fully embracing the role and the moment.
Parents lingered. Conversations flowed. Children bounced between activities. The room carried a sense of gratitude, warmth, and belonging that went far beyond the holiday decorations.
Events like Deck the Halls remind us that schools are more than buildings—they are communities. At Henry Doerr, that community showed up in full holiday spirit, wrapped in kindness, generosity, and the shared understanding that when families feel appreciated, everyone wins.
It was a beautiful morning—and one that will be remembered long after the decorations come down.
