Students at mock court trial

The Saginaw United High School Mock Trial Team recently had the opportunity to compete in Oakland County, thanks to a strong collaboration between the Saginaw Defenders Office and community partners.

The experience provided students with meaningful, real-world exposure to the legal system while allowing them to apply critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills in a competitive setting.

Through partnerships with local schools, educators, volunteers, and community supporters, students continue to gain access to opportunities that inspire future careers in public service and law.

The team delivered a strong performance, winning half of their competitions — an accomplishment that reflects their preparation, dedication, and resilience.

This opportunity was made possible through the support and guidance of several key contributors, including Attorney Demond Tibbs, who provided mentorship to students, and Community Relations Coordinator Melissa Hayes, who helped organize the experience. Saginaw United Assistant Principal Arshen Baldwin also played an important role in supporting the team and ensuring student success.

The district also extends its appreciation to the community members whose contributions helped cover travel and participation costs.

Experiences like this highlight the power of collaboration between schools and the community, creating pathways for students to explore future careers while building confidence and skills that extend beyond the classroom.

The Mock Trial Team will next participate in the Saginaw County Bar Association’s Law Day event on April 30.

More information will be shared as the event approaches.
