Seniors at Saginaw United High School received an unforgettable surprise Wednesday morning when representatives from Becca’s Closet announced they will cover the cost of prom for the entire Class of 2026.
Pam and Jay Kirtman, founders of the national nonprofit, traveled from Florida to deliver the news in person during a special gathering with students.
“We are so happy to be here and so happy to help you,” said Pam Kirtman, drawing a roaring round of applause from the seniors.
Because of the organization’s generous support, every senior at Saginaw United will be able to attend prom for free. The nonprofit is providing the school with a $14,000 prom grant to cover the cost of the event, ensuring there are no ticket costs or financial barriers for students.
The opportunity came after school counselor Mrs. Alex Houpis applied for the grant on behalf of the school.
Prom for the Class of 2026 will take place May 21 and will feature an “Enchanted Garden” theme. In addition to free admission, students will also receive complimentary prom photos and dinner.
The menu for the evening includes lamb chops, salmon, chicken, loaded potatoes, broccoli, and salad, creating a special dining experience for students as they celebrate the milestone event.
School leaders expressed their appreciation for the unexpected gift.
“These are what special moments are about—giving back,” said Eric Gordon. “Thank you from Saginaw United. We really appreciate this.”
Saginaw United is one of only seven schools in the country selected this year among schools with active Becca’s Closet chapters to receive a prom grant.
Becca’s Closet was created in memory of Rebecca “Becca” Kirtman, a high school student who began collecting and donating formal dresses after noticing that some classmates could not afford prom attire. After Becca passed away at the age of 16, her family continued her mission, expanding it into a national nonprofit that helps students attend prom and other milestone events with confidence.
For Saginaw United seniors, the surprise announcement turned an ordinary school morning into a moment of celebration—and ensured that every member of the Class of 2026 will have the opportunity to share in one of high school’s most memorable traditions.
