Dr. Wilson 'Doc' Smith

Dr. Wilson “Doc” Smith, a longtime educator and respected leader in the Saginaw Public School District, is being remembered for a career that shaped generations of students and helped guide the district through decades of change.

Known to students, colleagues, and community members simply as “Doc,” he dedicated more than three decades to the district, leaving a lasting impact on schools, staff, and thousands of young people in the Saginaw community.

Smith began his leadership career in the early 1970s as principal of Houghton Elementary School, where he first established the leadership style and commitment to students that would define his career.

Leading Saginaw High School for Nearly Three Decades

In 1976, Smith was appointed principal of Saginaw High School, a position he would hold for 27 years.

During his tenure, Smith led the historic high school through a time of change while guiding countless students toward graduation and future success. His long service made him one of the most recognizable and respected educational leaders in the city.

Former students and staff often recall Smith as a strong, steady presence in the building — someone who held high expectations for students while remaining deeply invested in their growth and well-being.

Service in District Leadership

After leaving the principalship in 2003, Smith continued to serve the district in several key leadership roles. Smith transitioned to the district’s central office, where he served as Director of Research.

He later became Director of Student Accountability and Customer Service.

Returning to the Schoolhouse

After years in district administration, Smith’s connection to schools remained strong. In 2007, he returned to building leadership as principal of Loomis Academy.

The school had recently opened as part of a district-wide renovation effort and was designed as a theme-based academy focused on math, science, and technology. Smith’s leadership guided the new school in its early years and continued his legacy of supporting student achievement.

A Lasting Legacy

Throughout his career, Smith devoted his life to education and to the students of Saginaw. From elementary classrooms to one of the city’s most historic high schools and into district leadership, his influence touched thousands of young people and helped shape the direction of Saginaw Public Schools.

His commitment to students, schools, and the community leaves behind a legacy that will long be remembered by those who had the opportunity to learn from and work alongside him.

Saginaw Public Schools extends its condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and former students of Wilson "Doc" Smith as the community remembers a lifetime dedicated to education.
