Teacher of the year

Saginaw Public Schools is proud to announce that Matthew Berchert, an instructor at the Saginaw Career Complex (SCC), has been selected as the 2026 Saginaw County Mridha Foundation Teacher of the Year.

Berchert received the surprise honor during a special recognition celebration hosted by the Saginaw Intermediate School District (ISD) on Wednesday, May 6, at Unity Hall.

This year marked an expansion of the long-standing Teacher of the Year program, which recognized outstanding educators across four categories: Preschool, Elementary, Middle School, and High School. Berchert was recognized as both the High School Teacher of the Year finalist and the overall countywide winner.

The finalists honored during the event included:

  • Courtney Blessing – North Elementary School, Birch Run Area Schools (Preschool)

  • Jodi Tack – K.C. Ling Elementary School, Hemlock Public School District (Elementary)

  • Tristen Siler – Hemlock Middle School, Hemlock Public School District (Middle School)

  • Matthew Berchert – Saginaw Career Complex, Saginaw Public Schools (High School & Overall Winner)

Berchert teaches in the Law & Public Safety program at SCC, where he works closely with students preparing for careers in law enforcement, public safety, and related fields. Known for his leadership, mentorship, and commitment to student success, Berchert has made a lasting impact on students both inside and outside the classroom.

Finalists and the overall winner were selected through a blind review process conducted by a committee made up of Saginaw ISD staff members, organizational leadership, and county superintendents. Nominations were reviewed anonymously using a rubric-based evaluation process designed to ensure fairness and consistency.

As the recipient of the Mridha Foundation Teacher of the Year distinction, Berchert will receive a $1,000 grant through a partnership between the Mridha Foundation and the Saginaw Community Foundation. The funding may be used toward continuing education, professional development, educational research, or other educational purposes.

Established in 2001, the Mridha Foundation recognizes individuals who demonstrate service, leadership, and a commitment to improving the lives of others through their work.

Berchert will also be recognized later this year during the Saginaw Community Foundation’s 2026 Annual Celebration at Saginaw Valley State University.

Saginaw Public Schools congratulates Matthew Berchert on this well-deserved honor and thanks him for the impact he continues to make on students and the community.
