Loomis student poses with mom, teacher

A Loomis Elementary kindergarten student is receiving international recognition after an outstanding performance in the World Maths Day Competition.

Meciah Thomas, a student in Mrs. Sheila Dupuis’ classroom, placed 1st in the United States among kindergarten participants and ranked 75th in the world in the global competition.

Meciah was recognized during a special school assembly at Loomis Elementary, where members of the Michigan Arsenal arena football team helped present his award and celebrate his achievement alongside classmates, staff, and family members.

According to his mother, Iya Allen, Meciah’s love for numbers and competition is something that naturally happens at home every day.

“They do it for fun,” Allen said, referring to Meciah and his brother. “They do this all day. Who can count the fastest. Who knows the biggest numbers. Him and his brother compete all day.”

Allen said she was proud, but not surprised, by her son’s accomplishment.

“I knew he was outstanding.”

The recognition became part of a memorable day at Loomis, as Michigan Arsenal players also spent time reading to students and speaking during the assembly about the importance of education, leadership, and hard work.

Saginaw Public Schools congratulates Meciah Thomas on this incredible achievement and celebrates the support of teachers, families, and community partners who continue to encourage student success.
