SCC students win $15,000 DeWalt grant

Students in the Saginaw Career Complex Auto Collision program received exciting news: their program was selected as the winner of the DeWalt and Hubbard Supply Classroom Makeover Contest, earning $15,000 in tools and equipment.

The winning Auto Collision program is led by SCC instructor Mr. Conners, whose students created and submitted a video highlighting the program, its needs, and the impact updated equipment would have on student learning and career preparation.

According to contest guidelines, participating schools were asked to create student-driven videos explaining why their classroom or program deserved a makeover and how upgraded equipment would benefit students.

The award will provide new banners, cordless and hand tools, PPE equipment, and additional classroom resources that students will begin using during the upcoming school year.

SCC was the first school selected for the award, which will support programs including:

  • HVAC

  • Building Construction

  • Engineering & Advanced Manufacturing

  • Auto Collision & Repair

SCC Principal Ben Leal said the investment will help students gain hands-on experience using industry-level equipment.

“This means that the students will be able to work with top-of-the-line tools and become familiar with the tools that they will be using in the field,” Leal said.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mitt Foley said the award reflects the importance of career and technical education opportunities for students preparing for future careers.

“Partners like DeWalt and Hubbard Supply understand the importance of CTE programs and the Saginaw Career Complex and what it is doing for kids,” Foley said.

The SCC Auto Collision program provides students with hands-on experience in vehicle repair, refinishing, safety practices, and industry preparation while helping students build skills for careers in the automotive industry.

Saginaw Public Schools congratulates the SCC Auto Collision students and staff on this outstanding achievement and thanks Dewalt and Hubbard Supply for investing in career and technical education opportunities for students.
