The Saginaw Public Schools Board of Education has selected three students to serve as student representatives and alternates on the Board of Education, continuing a program designed to elevate student voice and leadership within the district.
Students were selected from the district's two high schools — Saginaw United High School and Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy (SASA) — following interviews conducted Wednesday, June 3.
Returning for the 2026-27 school year is Diya Ramakrishnan of SASA, who was originally appointed during the program's inaugural year in 2025-26. Ramakrishnan will continue serving as SASA's student representative on the Board of Education.
Kasahn Byrd was selected as SASA's alternate student representative, while Caiden Dutton was selected as Saginaw United High School's student representative. Precious Guidry-Holmes was selected as Saginaw United's alternate student representative.
The 2025-26 school year marked the first time the Board of Education included student representatives. The initiative was created to provide students with an opportunity to share their perspectives on issues affecting their schools while gaining firsthand experience in educational leadership and governance.
Board members interviewed eight students for the positions and noted that the selection process was highly competitive.
Each of the students interviewed did an outstanding job, making the selection process a difficult one, board members said.
Student representatives participate in Board of Education meetings and discussions throughout the school year, helping ensure student perspectives are included in conversations that impact schools across the district.
Saginaw Public Schools plans to continue developing the student representative program as a way to prepare future student leaders and strengthen connections between students and district leadership.
