Student accepts certificate at celebration

This summer, a group of Saginaw Public School District students didn’t slow down — they stepped up.

Through The Simmons Advantage, these young leaders completed a powerful workforce development program designed to equip them with real-world job skills, confidence, and purpose.

The celebration held at Saginaw Middle School marked the end of six weeks of hard work and transformation, made possible through a four-year partnership between The Simmons Advantage and Saginaw Public Schools.

Founded by Kwame Simmons, Sr., the program connects students to local job placements across the Saginaw area, offering experience, exposure, and essential life skills.

“What we’re offering can impact so many more young people’s lives,” said Simmons.

One of the highlights of this summer came from Job Coach LaShawn Williams, who works both with The Simmons Advantage and Saginaw Public Schools.

With over 34 years in education, including 28 years supporting students with special needs, Williams shared a touching story about a student who initially planned to enter the HVAC field — but by the end of the summer, told her he now wanted to become a Job Coach, inspired by the impact she had on him.

“It’s more than just job coaching, it’s about planting seeds of purpose and watching them grow,” Williams said.

Williams continued, “At The Simmons Advantage, we believe that every young person — especially those with disabilities — deserves the chance to thrive. Through guidance, support, and belief in their potential, we help them break through barriers and achieve goals they never thought possible.”
