Saginaw Public Schools is proud to announce that four Saginaw United High School seniors have been selected as recipients of the 2026 Heart of the City Rae Lynn Tinsley-Buckley Scholarship of Journalism.
The scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated growth, leadership, and communication skills, particularly through journalism, storytelling, and community engagement.
This year’s recipients are Henri Daniels, Zachary Gilyard, Melchizedek Washington, and Amaria Tarver.
The students will be honored during the Heart of the City event on June 4, 2026, at the Horizons Conference Center.
Henri Daniels
Henri Daniels will attend Saginaw Valley State University. During his time at Saginaw United, Henri served as an anchor for the S.U.N. Network (Saginaw United News), developing strong communication, leadership, and on-camera skills.
Zachary Gilyard
Zachary Gilyard plans to use skills he developed through journalism after high school. Through his experience in journalism, Zachary developed confidence in public speaking and strengthened his communication skills, helping him grow as a leader and storyteller.
Melchizedek Washington
Melchizedek Washington will attend Olivet College. His involvement in journalism included participating in a multimedia production of The Creation, where he demonstrated confidence, voice, and presence.
Amaria Tarver
Amaria Tarver, who plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University, has expressed a strong interest in journalism, communications, and creative media. She is passionate about storytelling, community impact, and using her voice to inspire others—making her a natural fit for a scholarship centered on journalism and communication.
Looking Ahead
The Heart of the City Scholarship honors the legacy of Rae Lynn Tinsley-Buckley by supporting students who demonstrate both talent and purpose in how they communicate, lead, and serve others.
Saginaw Public Schools congratulates these outstanding students and looks forward to celebrating their achievements on June 4.
