As we return from Spring Break and enter the final stretch of the school year, here’s a look at what’s been happening across Saginaw Public Schools—and what’s coming next.
A Month of Reading Across SPSD
March was Reading Month across Saginaw Public Schools, and classrooms across the district were filled with books, guest readers, and engaging activities that reinforced the importance of literacy.
Thompson Middle School celebrated Dr. Seuss Day, with staff reading to students during lunch, while other schools welcomed community and state leaders, including Dr. Chris Allen and State Representative Amos O’Neal.


Students at Henry Doerr Early Childhood Center also had a surprise visit from Governor Gretchen Whitmer. During her visit, the governor read with students and highlighted Michigan’s PreK for All initiative, emphasizing the importance of early learning.

SPSD Featured on WNEM’s Education Matters

Saginaw Public Schools was featured on WNEM TV-5’s Education Matters, highlighting the strength of our programs from early education through advanced academics.
SASA Principal Kasydra Goode-Tibbs and Handley Principal Dr. Jonathon “Dr. G” Gould shared how SPSD students are supported at every stage—building strong literacy skills early and continuing into rigorous, college-level opportunities.

Loomis Teacher Honored with Golden Apple Award

Jessie Loomis Elementary teacher Rawaida Bates was surprised with the Mid-Michigan NOW Golden Apple Award, recognizing her impact on students and her dedication to literacy. With 27 years in education, Bates continues to inspire a love for reading both inside and outside the classroom.
SPSD Leader Publishes Nationally Recognized Book

Saginaw Public Schools is also celebrating a major professional milestone, as Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mit L. Foley has published his first book, Transforming Urban Schools for Educational Excellence, through Routledge/Taylor & Francis. Drawing from decades of experience in education, the book highlights strategies for building strong school systems and reflects the work happening right here in Saginaw.
SASA Student Takes the Stage

Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy student Kaycen Brown recently performed in A Raisin in the Sun at the Midland Center for the Arts.

Kaycen, a 6th grader, played Travis Younger and represented SPSD with excellence throughout the multi-weekend production, showcasing the talent and confidence our students bring beyond the classroom.
Kindergarten Sign Day Welcomes the Class of 2039

March 10 marked Kindergarten Sign Day across the district, as we welcomed our newest students—the future Class of 2039.

Families had the opportunity to connect with staff and begin their journey with Saginaw Public Schools, setting the stage for years of learning and growth ahead.

Saginaw United High School
Students engaged in hands-on learning and career exploration throughout March, including participation in Mock Trial at the Midland County Courthouse and ASVAB testing, helping students explore future pathways.
Athletics and student-led initiatives continued to build school pride and engagement.
Saginaw United Girls Basketball Caps Strong Season

The Saginaw United Phoenix girls varsity basketball team wrapped up a strong season with a trip to the MHSAA District Championship game. While the season ended in the finals, the team’s performance highlighted the continued growth of the program and the dedication of its student-athletes.
Saginaw United Seniors Receive Surprise: Prom Fully Funded

Saginaw United seniors received an unforgettable surprise as a national nonprofit awarded the Class of 2026 a $14,000 grant to fully cover prom costs. The gift removes financial barriers and ensures every senior can take part in this milestone celebration.
Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy (SASA)
SASA students continued to excel in academic competitions, arts exhibitions, and STEM-focused learning. Students participated in Model UN, earned recognition in art competitions, and showcased their work through research and innovation.

Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy students earned top honors at the Flint Regional Science & Engineering Fair, with multiple students advancing to the international level. Their projects—focused on areas such as cancer detection and environmental impact—highlight the depth of research and real-world problem-solving taking place in SPSD classrooms.

A Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy student is already pushing beyond traditional academic limits. At just 12 years old, seventh grader Xavier Velasco is taking AP Calculus BC and physics—courses typically reserved for high school seniors—after completing the district’s available math curriculum. His journey highlights both his curiosity and the district’s ability to support advanced learners.
Saginaw Career Complex (SCC)

SCC continued to provide real-world learning experiences, with students participating in SkillsUSA and BPA competitions, hosting a successful Open House, and engaging in career-focused training programs that connect classroom learning to future opportunities.
SCC Welding Students Earn Top Honors at Delta College Competition

Saginaw Career Complex welding students delivered a strong performance at Delta College’s STS competition, earning multiple top finishes across events. Students placed in weld inspection and arc welding categories, including first-place finishes by Brett Hunke and Jacob Allen. Their success reflects the hands-on training and skill development happening daily at SCC.

Attendance just got competitive.

Saginaw Public Schools is introducing a new Attendance Championship Belt, awarded monthly to the building with the best attendance. Presented by the Truancy Department, this initiative encourages consistency, accountability, and school pride.
